Hello everybody!

I hope that you are all well. I'm doing great, I'm so happy that the weather is getting warmer and that spring is almost here! I hate Matsumoto winters, they are too cold for me.

I've had a lot of fun teaching all of my classes over the past month, they've been really great. However, I am a little sad because two of my high school students, Mai and Miyu, are graduating from high school so they are leaving us unfortunately. It's been wonderful to teach them both over the past year and I'm sure that they will continue to do very well in whatever they decide to do next. Good luck Miyu and Mai!

I hope everybody is ok, speak to you soon!

From,

Matt

How's everybody doing? This winter has been disappointing. Not enough snow!!

Did you have a good Valentine's Day? It's so different here than it is back in the US. The idea of 'giri choko' is not something we do at all. We also don't have White Day. In fact, Valentine's Day is closer to White Day. Usually the guy buys something for the lady. However, a couple usually exchanges gifts.

So why did the 'giri choko' system start over here? Apparently you can blame Mary Chocolate. They encouraged women to buy chocolate for men back in the late 1950s. And White Day wasn't started until the '80s apparently? There was a very interesting article about it on an English news site.

I'm glad 'giri choko' is starting to die out. It seems like that would get very expensive in a big company!

But Valentine's Day was fun as a schoolkid. You could say we do 'giri Valentines' - every kid gives Valentine cards to every other kid in class. But they're small, cheap cards featuring popular characters. They often come with delicious candy too!

Cards like these!

So whether you do Valentine's Day or not, I hope you're having a good February!

We love Ai!

Kaori :)
